The Benefits of Emergency Dental Care
Alleviation of Pain & Discomfort
A fractured tooth, a dislodged crown, or a throbbing toothache can lead to immense discomfort. Many times, the only solution to alleviate this pain is through professional dental care provided by your dentist. After receiving treatment at our practice, your child can return to their daily activities without enduring pain or further distress.
Avoid Further Complications
Often, delaying medical help for your child can make their condition worse. For instance, for a severe tooth infection, earlier detection and intervention could potentially save a tooth. However, prolonged delays may result in irreversible damage to the infected tooth which might require extraction and pose serious health risks if the infection spreads in compromised children.
Save Time & Money
The quicker you seek emergency care, the more cost-effective your child’s treatment will be. For example; mending a broken tooth with a dental crown costs significantly less than removing it and replacing it with a space maintainer. If you consult with our dentist as soon as you notice any issue in your child's oral health, both time and money can be saved.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
Knocked-out baby teeth are generally not replaced, even if they’re lost prematurely. If it’s a baby tooth, your child may need to come into our office to have their mouth examined and get a baseline x-ray so we can monitor healing. If the tooth knocked out was a back tooth, they may also need to get a space maintainer to help prevent any space loss. The space maintainer prevents the adjacent teeth from shifting toward and through the now-empty bony socket.
For an adult tooth, you will need to get help immediately. Recover the tooth, gently rinse it with water to clear any debris, and immediately put it back into the site that it came out of. If you cannot do this, then after rinsing, put it in a container of cold milk to keep it hydrated with nutrients.. Call in to let us know what happened and come to our office immediately. Don't spend too much time treating pain or bleeding, time is of the essence. Your child’s tooth must be re-attached within 1-2 hours for it to have a chance at a favorable long term prognosis. We can treat your child’s pain when they get to our office.
What should I do if my child’s dental work falls out?
Collect the crown or space maintainer and place it in a plastic baggie. Give us a call us to schedule an appointment, and make sure to bring your child’s dental work in with you. It may be possible to reattach a crown instead of completely replacing it, which will help greatly reduce the cost of treatment.
What should I do about a severe toothache?
A severe toothache could indicate that your child has a large cavity or an infected tooth. You should schedule a consultation at our office right away, since it will likely cause the need for extracting the tooth instead of being able to save it.
What should I do if my child has chipped, broken or cracked a tooth?
First, treat their discomfort and bleeding. Then, contact us for a quick phone call consult to see how quickly you need to schedule an appointment for this. Many times, these small chips and fractures can be monitored if they aren't causing pain or sensitivity. If treatment is required, we can restore the damaged tooth, and ensure your child’s smile remains healthy and strong.
What should I do if my child has a loose tooth?
If a baby tooth has come loose and it’s not due to an oral injury, you don’t have to do anything. Baby teeth are meant to fall out eventually, so this is natural.
If your tooth is loose after taking trauma and has shifted positions in the mouth or looks like it disappeared in the bone, call us schedule a visit. For most baby teeth, we monitor trauma that causes the tooth to move, but for adult teeth we need to do treatment. Adult teeth that get knocked out of position will need immediate treatment to make sure we give them the best chance to recover and last a lifetime like they are supposed to. For any questions, the best thing to do is to call in to get a consultation with your child’s dentist to have their mouth examined, and determine if there are any concerns or treatment needed.
